Jesus came to Jerusalem for a feast and approached a pool where sick people gathered for healing. An angel of God, at certain times, stirred the waters and whoever was first to enter was healed. Why the first person, we do not know for sure, but God honors those who are desperate and persistent. There was a man laying sick for 38 years and Jesus asked what we may see as a dumb question: “…’Do you wish to get well?’” (6c). There are people who do not desire healing, but thrive on the attention they receive in their illness and express no desire for healing. But this man was simply unable to get to the water having no one to help him. “Jesus said to him, ‘Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.’” (8) Jesus called him to do what he could not do for 38 years, but he was not offended by Jesus question or by His command to do the impossible. Are we easily offended or are we willing to persist and take a risk to receive from the Lord?
