Jesus did not assert He was the Father, but that He was in harmony with Him. “…’Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing;…” (19b) He was only able to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit because He walked in harmony and submission to His Father. His authority, teaching and works [miracles], flowed from the Father’s love for Him and for His people. Jesus’ dependence and obedience to the Father is the example He gave His followers (John 14). This is not tied to belief or confidence in ourselves, but on our faith in God and His great love for us! “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” (24) Our faith is strong not because of who we are, but Who God is and what He has done for us. When we are dependent on and confident in Him, we transition from death to life! Like Jesus, we must live in complete dependency on our Heavenly Father.
