Because this man was carrying his pallet [bed], Jews rebuked him: “…’It is the Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.’” (10b). They did not get excited about his healing, but were angry about his breaking their traditions. He told them the same man who healed him also told him to carry his bedding. When they asked who said this, he did not know because Jesus had slipped away from the crowd. Jesus did not heal him for attention, but to serve both his physical and spiritual needs. Jesus sought him out in the temple and warned, “…’Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.’” (14b). Jesus was after this man’s soul to turn him from his sins, but the Jews opposed Jesus having no concern for the man’s body or his soul. We must never put being “right” over being compassionately concerned for others!
