The growing crowd got into boats seeking Jesus and saying, “…’Rabbi, when did You get here?’” (25b). They were not drawn to Him because of the signs, but because they “‘…ate of the loaves and were filled.’” (26c). Much of humanity is driven by fleshly appetites and never develop an appetite for spiritual matters. Jesus exhorts them: “Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you,…” (27a, b). Rather than receive His correction, they formed a religious argument from their past. Jesus tells them, “…This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.’” (29b). Though He stated plainly, “…’I am the bread of life;…’” (36b), Jesus could not elevate their perceptions from the earthly realm because of their attachment to earthly appetites. Passion prevents proper perceptions promoting perverted pursuits. Let us hunger for things above!
