Jesus taught in Capernaum where they witnessed His miracles. Yet, even those who followed Him struggled to understand and accept His words. He was not who [the Messiah] they expected. Jesus challenged them regarding their offense at His word: “What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?” (62). If they were offended by this teaching, how would they face the offense of the cross. Then He clarified, saying: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” (63). God’s ways and thoughts are not ours (Isaiah 55) and until we see the limitations of our flesh and rely fully on His Spirit, we will neither understand or accept them. Even the twelve disciples struggled as Peter said, “…’Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.’” (68b-69). Though God’s ways may challenge our expectations [limited by the flesh], let us trust Him fully, especially when things are hard to understand.
