In the middle of the feast Jesus went to the temple to teach the assembled worshipers. Many were astonished: “…’How has this man become learned, having never been educated?’” (15b). His response to them is fascinating: “…’My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.’” (16b). Jesus was not seeking self-promotion, but the honor of His Father. Unfortunately, today many of us are promoting ourselves, our churches, and our ministries rather than God’s glory. At times we attribute our insights and learning to a level of education or effort rather than attentiveness to God’s voice found in His presence and Word. We publish our “credentials” and “accomplishments.” This does not facilitate God’s kingdom but leads to corrupt communications. May God give us the wisdom and grace to present only what God gives us, for God’s glory, and for the benefit of God’s people.
