Earlier people sought Jesus because He fed them. Some sought Jesus to kill Him. Others were confused because He spoke openly yet those wanting to kill Him said nothing. Some ignored Him because they “knew” where He was from, and therefore, He could not be their Messiah. Many missed who Jesus really was because of fleshly appetites, insecurities seen in protecting places of comfort and power, or because of what they thought they knew [faulty presumptions]. Jesus did not persist in arguing to win them over, but persisted in presenting God’s kingdom through teaching and miracles. As a result, many believed in Him and were saying, “…’When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?’” (31b). We must be careful lest we be prevented from seeing Christ because of these stumbling blocks and, instead, humbly pursue God to open our eyes to see the truth of Who He is!
