As Jesus persisted in ministry, opinions about who He was created much division. Those convinced from His miracles and teaching, struggled because of what they thought they knew. “Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem,…” (42) Officers, sent to arrest Jesus, returned without Him. They responded, “…’Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.’” (46b). The Pharisees answered by asserting their education and presenting arguments while looking down on the crowd. Their condescending words reflected an emotional attachment to their perspective. Nicodemus, who previously came to Jesus, tried to defend Him by appealing to the Law, but was mocked. The Pharisees appealed to Scripture, asserted their authority, and mocked the less educated. Though they won some arguments, they totally lost the Truth! Are we preferring a good argument to the truth?
