When Jesus spoke of His coming death, some wondered if He was suicidal. Their perverted reaction was due to an earthbound perspective. While suicide is rooted in selfishness, Jesus death was rooted in love for the Father and His people to rescue us from our bondage to sin. Those with a mere earthly perspective cannot comprehend God’s love. Jesus clarified: “…for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” (24b). Outside of faith in Christ, there is no hope of salvation or of knowing truth. When He is lifted up on the cross, they would understand He was not doing as He chose, but as the Father directed for our benefit. His comfort and peace were in this: “And He who sent me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” (29). Jesus lack of selfishness led many to faith in Him. May we follow His example and enjoy God’s presence, peace and heavenly perspective!
