These few verse are often misunderstood: “…’If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’” (31-32). Jesus spoke to those who believed in Him, but clarified saying it is insufficient to merely receive His Word, but we must walk it out [continue in it] in life. It’s not mere information or what we say only, but what we do as a result. However, many could not see or admit their bondage to sin. Jesus elaborated saying, “…’Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.’” (24b). He continues to explain that neither Abraham or God was their father because their deeds were inconsistent with both. Then He pointed out their deeds were consistent with the devil. Thus, while they were deeply religious, their deeds revealed they were not from God but from the devil. Our deeds reveal who our father really is! We must admit our bondage, turn to Christ and His Word, and walk it out to live in freedom with God as our Father.!
