As conflict between Jesus the Jews escalated, He did not back down from truth but strengthened His argument. Their response developed into name calling due to the weakness of their position. They called Him a demon possessed foreigner, but Jesus attributed their position to being disconnected with God. He also said, “But I do not seek My glory; there is one who seeks and judges.” (50) Jesus did not exalt Himself, but His Father and entrusted His reputation into His hands. He also asserted “…’If any keeps My word, he will never taste of death.’” (52c). This seemed irrational to the Jews so they challenged and belittled His assertion. Jesus pushed them over the edge by saying, “…’Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.’” (58b). Then they picked up stones to kill Him, but He slipped away. Like Jesus, let us not back down from truth, but keep focused on God’s plan, strategy and glory even when our opposition is irrational and hostile.
