Joshua and Israel fought against numerous cities destroying everyone living there. To what should we attribute their great, even miraculous success? First, we note Joshua’s full obedience to God’s word: “…He left no survivor, but he utterly destroyed all who breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.” (40b). More importantly, noted three times in this chapter, it was not facilitated by their abilities, but by God being present to fight for them! “Joshua captured all these kings and their lands at one time, because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.” (42) When we obey God’s directives, He fights for us!
