Under Moses the tribe of Reuben, Gad and half-tribe of Manasseh received an inheritance East of the Jordan [just outside God’s promised land]. This land was acquired in battles during their journey to Canaan. Across the Jordan, after Moses died, Joshua invaded the land defeating the Hittite, Amorite, Canaanite, Perizzite, Hivite and Jebusite peoples. This involved multiple battles defeating 31 kings. How they accomplished this is seen in the listing of cities: “…the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; the king of Jerusalem, one;……….the king of Tirzah, one; in all, thirty-one kings.” (9-24). Like the Israelites under Joshua, we, under Christ’s leadership, tackle one battle at a time. When we come to Christ, we have amazing victories, but there are battles yet to come which we face one at a time.
