Judah was central to the nation of Israel and its territory is the first to be defined. Note many of the cities were still in the hands of enemies, such as Ekron, Ashdod and Gaza. Though not yet conquered, they were included. We might ask why such detail is given to defining borders. While Israel fought beside their brothers, they did not occupy territory belonging to their brothers. In Corinthians we read there are varieties of ministries under one God benefiting His entire family. For example: “For to one is given the word of wisdom…… to another the word of knowledge…,.to another faith….and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,…” (1 Corinthians 12:8, 9 & ). All that God gives us is not for our promotion, prominence, power or comfort, but for serving each other in love!
