When Joshua sent out the twelve spies to Jericho, they lodged in a harlot’s house named Rahab. When the king of Jericho heard about this, he sent word to her to turn them over to him. However, Rahab hid and protected the spies. She then told the spies of the fear that had come on Jericho because of what God had already done for them: “For we have heard how the LORD dried up the Red Sea………and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites…” (10a, c). Regarding God, Rahab declared: “…He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” (11b). The faith and understanding of Rahab is amazing as it rests solely in the reports of what God did in both their distant and their recent past. Because of this, and how she treated the spies, she and all her family who gathered in her house were promised protection. Our faith impacts not only ourselves, but also all those we love.
