The sons of Levi were the spiritual leaders of Israel with varied responsibilities. Levites did not receive an inheritance like other tribes. Each tribe gave cities with pasture lands so they were dispersed throughout the nation. Levites were an expense to Israel, but they benefited the entire nation. This was by both God’s design and command. In this way, Levites were both separated and integrated. Separated to serve the spiritual needs of Israel and integrated to provide the practical means of service. Spiritual servants in the church should be separated and supported by the church, but not in a way they are exalted to a position where they cease to tend to the church’s needs. This is God’s design, command, and blessing to the church! Leaders are called to serve not lord over God’s people.
