Luke 18:28-30
The rich young ruler walked away in sadness because he would not “let go” of his attachment to and
dependency on wealth. “Peter said, ‘Behold, we have left our own homes and followed You.” (28) Peter
may have been trying to comfort Jesus who watched this young man walk away. But Jesus’ tells Peter
and the disciples what anyone give up to follow Him benefits them now and in their future. “…’there is
no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of
God, who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life.’” (29b-
30) Being unwilling to let go of everything in this life to pursue God’s kingdom reflects ignorance of what
Jesus promises us.
