Luke 13:18-21
In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus illustrates the nature of God’s kingdom. Though small, “…it
grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make their nest in its branches.” (19b). The seed of God’s
Word has significant power and potential. Second, it becomes a tree where new vulnerable life (like
birds) is nurtured and protected to maturity. In the story of the leaven, a woman puts a small amount in
the flour “…until it was all leavened.” (21c). Much of what God does in us starts inside and is seemingly
small, but eventually permeates our entire being so it is obvious to all. Let us not be like those
“…despised the day of small things?…” (Zechariah 4:10a). We must keep in mind what God is doing in
us is “…’Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6c). We
must remember, little is much when God is in it.
