2 Chronicles 14:1-8
Though Abijah had success in the Lord, he was not a king who followed God. When Asa [his son] became king Judah was at peace for ten years. “And Asa did what was good and right in the sight of the LORD his God, for he removed the foreign altars and high places, tore down the memorial stones, cut down the Asherim, and commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers and to comply with the Law and the commandment.” (2-4) The order here is significant. Asa was a good king only because he facilitated the worship of God according to the word of God. To obey God’s word, we must remove obstacles [idols] to seeking God. Many say they do not have the time to pray, read His word, or gather with His people. However, it is really an unwillingness to remove the obstacles [idols] inhibiting their turning to God. When we remove idols, then we have the space to seek God and His word. In fact, it is our priority! Finally, we can not obey God if we are ignorant of His word. After removing the obstacles to seeking God, we are able to pursue in Him in spiritual disciplines by the power of His Spirit so we can comply with His Word. May God reveal the idols needing to be removed so we make seek Him and comply with His Word.
