Luke 15:25-32
In this prodigal son story, the oldest brother remained home serving and obeying dad. When he heard
the celebration of his brother’s return “…he became angry and was not wiling to go in; (26a). We must
be careful in our commitment to serve and obey our Father, not to develop a self-righteous attitude. In
serving he failed to maintain compassion for, or recognition of, his brother. He spoke of him as “…this
son of yours…” (30) refusing to participate. The father reminds him, “But we had to celebrate and
rejoice, for this BROTHER of yours was dead and has begun to live,…” (32a). The older brother
dishonored his father and disdained his brother. May we always remember the lost and celebrate their
return to God’s family!
