1 Samuel 30:21-31 “Remember God & Your Supporters!”
David was greeted by those too exhausted to go into battle and he greeted them also. However, there were some “…worthless men…” (22a) who did not want to share the spoil with them because they did not go with them to battle. These worthless men had forgotten a very important truth! “Then David said, ‘You must not do so, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us, who has kept us and delivered into our hand the band that came against us.” (23) Note David did not address these worthless men as enemies, but brothers who had forgotten who the real deliver was and who their real enemy was [the raiding band]. David also reminded them though their role was different from those who stayed behind, they were not less valuable to him. “…For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike.’” (24b, c). David also sent spoils to the elders of Israel, friends, and to all the cities who supported them in this time of affliction. We must remember God is our deliverer, who our real enemy is [devil], and value and honor those who support us in our battles though their roles are different.
