1 Kings 15:1-15 “Breaking Away!”
After Rehoboam, His son Abijam became king for just three years. His mother Maacah (queen mother) became a wicked influence after the death of her husband. Though Abijam knew of his grandfather David’s example, he was more influenced by his father and mother. His reign was short. However, because David did what was right in God’s sight, God raised up a son after him. “And Abijam slept with his fathers and they buried him in the city of David; and Asa his son became king in his place.” (😎 Asa broke away from the evil influences of his grandmother and father and returned to God. “Asa did what was right in the sight of the Lord, like David his father.” (11) Besides dealing with various forms of idolatry, “He also removed Maacah his mother from being queen mother, because she made a horrid image as an Asherah;…” (13a) Asa was devoted to the Lord and did the right things in spite of evil surroundings. From him we learn we are not doomed by evil surroundings and examples, but can look to those who are healthier influences. We can break away from the evil and be fully devoted to God bringing health to following generations.
