Breastplate of Righteousness

The armor of God described in Ephesians 6 is far more than a familiar Bible lesson. Paul wrote these words from prison, looking past the Roman soldier guarding him and pointing to something infinitely greater. Every piece of armor he described was drawn directly from the book of Isaiah, where the armor belonged to God Himself. In Jewish thought, the only garment that represented God on earth was the breastplate worn by the high priest. That breastplate was a composite piece of clothing embedded with twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and inside it rested the Urim and Thummim, a sacred object connected to the name of God that gave the priest illuminated, Spirit-led answers to the most complex problems the nation faced. Jesus, as the last and greatest High Priest, fulfilled that priestly role and made this armor available to every believer.

The battles visible in culture today are not primarily natural battles. They are spiritual ones, and only the church is equipped to confront them. When believers fail to engage in spiritual warfare, evil increases in the natural world. The breastplate of righteousness works the same way the ancient priestly breastplate did. When the priest walked in righteousness, the light illuminated and God spoke. When unrighteousness was present, the light went dark. The same principle applies today. Repentance and right relationship with God keep the light on, allowing His wisdom and power to flow through His people into situations that are far beyond natural human ability.

This is not only a personal calling. Paul addressed the church as a community, using the language of brethren and drawing on the image of the priest who carried the names of all twelve tribes before God. The body of Christ is interconnected, and what happens in one part affects the whole. God’s desire is for His people to carry His presence beyond the walls of a church building and into every boardroom, school, neighborhood, and conversation. Wherever a believer stands, they stand on holy ground because they carry Him. The armor of God is a call to stand, to carry His presence, and to let His light shine into a world that desperately needs it.
