2 Samuel 11:1-27 “Covering Sin Displeases God”
This chapter begins with David sending Joab and his men into battle with great success. “Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle,….……But David stayed at Jerusalem.” (1d) After David gets up from a place of rest he walks to the roof and sees a beautiful woman bathing. In his place of success and comfort David became vulnerable to sin. In the place of battle he risked his life, but in the place of success and comfort, he risked his walk with God. When David inquired of her identity someone said, “…’Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”’” (3b). Her commitment in marriage should have dissuaded David from further pursuit, but instead he sent for her, committed adultery and she became pregnant. David tried to cover his sin with deceit by having her husband come home from battle to attribute her pregnancy to him, but Uriah failed to cooperate. So David utilized Joab to facilitate Uriah’s death in war. It may have looked like David got away with this, “…But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the LORD.” (27C). Like David, our covered up [sin displeases God and we will eventually have to face its consequences.
