2 Samuel 21:15-22 “Facing Giants”
David’s success against Goliath inspired others to rise up against great odds to kill other giants. In one of their battles a descendent of the giant “…was girded with a new sword, and he intended to kill David. But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, helped him and struck the Philistine and killed him…” (16c-17a). David’s killing of Goliath, who intimidated all Israel, not only led to a great victory over the Philistines, but inspired others to step up to face other giants. Abishai fiercely rescued David from a giant, but his vulnerability was obvious to the nation so they protected him as a leader. Today we face giants in our culture and we need to face them knowing God is with them and thus inspiring others to do the same. Here we realize the danger of fighting alone! So we recognize the need to support of our leaders. We must stand with one other and have each other’s backs including our leaders. When facing giants, we need to see the value of both the team and its leaders. Remember our response will either encourage or discourage others.
