1 Samuel 22:1-6
David escaped to the cave of Adullam where his brothers and family came to him. Others in distress, debt and discontent because of Saul, fled to David and he became their leader. The fear and insecurity of Saul resulted in oppression of many. Even his brothers who initially reacted poorly to his response to Goliath, now joined him so their were about 400 men. David then fled to Moab where he asked the king to take care of his parents “…until I know what God will do for me.” (3c). While in the “stronghold,” the prophet Gad spoke to him: “…’Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.’…” (5b). As David was uncertain about God’s will, he received a prophetic directive to go to Judah where, from a worldly point of view, it made him more vulnerable to Saul’s aggressions. Because David had a heart for God, he went into the forest of Hereth. David’s safe place was in the will of God. God was His stronghold defying earthly logic. Saul would soon learn of his location and immediately pursue him there. However, David would begin to learn, even in this place of vulnerability, that God would be his stronghold. God’s will is the safest place for us even when it defy’s human logic!
