2 Samuel 7:1-17 “Good Idea or God’s Idea?”
As David came to a place of relative peace, he consulted with Nathan the prophet about building a house for God. This seemed a reasonable and good idea from a human perspective: “…’See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains.,’” (2b). Nathan agreed seeing God was clearly with David in all he did. But God came to Nathan that night and said, “…, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in?” (5). God reminds David of all He has done for him, His people and His faithfulness to them even in correction and discipline. God is not in need of our ideas or efforts on His behalf, but we are in great need of His direction and efforts on our behalf. This word is so telling: “…The LORD also declares to you that the LORD will make a house for you.” (11c). Regarding the church, Jesus said to Peter: “…upon this rock I will build My church;…” (Matthew 16:18b). Understanding of Who Jesus is, allows us to receive revelation and releases Christ to build His church! We need God’s direction not better ideas! God desires our attention over our ideas and efforts.
