2 Samuel 5:17-25 “Inquiring of God”
“When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek out David;…” (17a) Nothing frightens our enemies like the church united under Christ as King. After going to the stronghold, “…David inquired of the LORD, saying, ‘Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?”…” (19a, b). David had obtained unity, did not assume God’s favor but made careful inquiry of Him and then followed His directives with great success. Our enemies rarely give up quickly and often reassemble like the Philistines at Rephaim. Again, David does not presume on God’s favor or the strategy previously received, but humbles himself inquiring of God again. This time God gives a different strategy! “Then David did so, just as the LORD had commanded him, and struck down the Philistines…” (25b). We must never assume that because God gave us a strategy that was successful, it should be repeated. What should be repeated is a constant expression of a careful dependence and inquire of God.
