Those Shoes of Power

Spiritual warfare is real, and the Apostle Paul makes clear in Ephesians 6 that God has not left believers unprepared. After five chapters addressing marriage, family, church unity, and doctrine, Paul closes with a sobering reminder: everything he wrote about is a target. The enemy, described through the Greek word methodia, does not attack randomly. He studies each person, identifies their weaknesses, and crafts a strategy specifically designed to bring them down. The only sufficient response is the whole armor of God, and one of its most overlooked pieces is the footwear: having your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

Paul’s description of this armor is rooted not just in the image of a Roman soldier but in the Old Testament itself. He draws from Isaiah 52:7, where a runner brings news of victory from the battlefield, and from the priestly garments described in Exodus 28, which notably did not include shoes. Priests entered the temple barefoot, just as Moses and Joshua were told to remove their sandals on holy ground. Paul applies this image to every believer, calling them to walk each day in humble dependence on God rather than relying on their own credentials or strength. The peace he refers to is the Hebrew concept of shalom, not the forced quiet of Roman rule, but the wholeness, healing, and restoration that comes through Jesus Christ.

Because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross, the record of every sin was nailed there and every demonic power was publicly defeated. That victory opened the door for believers to be clothed in God’s own armor. The word preparation in Ephesians 6:15 carries the meaning of readiness, echoing God’s instruction to Israel in Exodus 12 to eat the Passover meal with their shoes on, ready to move the moment deliverance came. Today, believers are called to carry that same urgency and that same gospel into every space they occupy, into government, education, communities, and broken lives, as royal priests announcing that Jesus has already won.
