2 Samuel 20:1-25 “Valuing Loyalty”
The arguing in the previous chapter between Israel and Judah opened the door for another rebellion. Sheba, a Benjamite then says: “…, ‘We have no portion in David, Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse; Every man to his tents, O Israel!’” (1b, c). Sheba had a sense he was in danger and fled to the city called Abel. When David arrived in Jerusalem he put the 10 violated concubines [by Absalom] in a house, gave them security, and provisions. He then orders Amasa to call the men of Judah to come before him within three days for his direction. When Amasa didn’t show, David spoke of his concern to Abishai that Sheba was a greater threat then Absalom. Joab then assembled the mighty men to pursue Sheba. In Gibeon Amasa came to meet Joab. Joab approached him with the pretense of affection and killed him. The presence of Amasa’s body halted their progress so Joab removed him from the highway and they went on pursuing Sheba. Through the cooperation of a wise woman of Abel, Sheba’s head was delivered to them and the revolt was squelched. God used imperfect people to begin to unite Israel. We may have many questions about Joab’s actions, but his loyalty to David is unquestioned. May God grant us loyalty in His church today.
