1 Kings 13:11-34 “Without Repentance Comes Destruction”
Jeroboam offered the man of God a meal (with the king) and a gift for his personal healing. He did not repent, but was content with his own well-being. But the man of God refused saying it was not matter how much he offered him. Why? “For I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’” (9) Then a certain prophet living in Bethel heard of what he did and found him sitting under an oak tree. He asked if he were the man of God from Judah. When he said yes, the prophet invited him for a meal but he declined sharing with him God’s directives. It is likely God did not want him corrupted by people who had willingly adopted compromised worship. Then the old prophet told him an angel had visited commanding him to bring him back for a meal, but he was lying. While the man of God was no seduced by material things, he was led astray by a “old prophet” who lied to him. The man of God was killed by a lion because he violated God’s word thus verifying the certainty this was a word from God. “Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways,…” (33). As a consequence of Jeroboam’s failure led to the destruction of his house.
