2 Chronicles 33:21-25
“Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for two years in Jerusalem. He did evil in the sight of the LORD, just as his father Manasseh had done, and Amon sacrificed to all the carved images which his father Manasseh had made, and he served them.” (21-22) What we sacrifice for will become what we serve! Amon was highly influenced by the long term pattern of his father. “Furthermore, he did not humble himself before the LORD as his father Manasseh had done, but Amon multiplied his guilt.” (23) While evil passes easily from generation to generation, good requires a consistent humble repentance, dependence, and obedience to break and replace a pattern of evil. Otherwise, evil progresses from generation to generation. So prevalent were Amon’s evils that his own servants conspired to put him to death. Often the anger of those who rise against evil leaders is no better than the evil they oppose. Consequently, the people of the land killed the conspirators and made his son Josiah king in his place. We will see in the next chapter how this evil cycle can be broken.
