Luke 14:7-11
When Jesus saw invited guests picking out the most honorable seats, He gave a parable to establish a
principle. When invited to a wedding feast, we ought not seek out high places of honor lest we are
required to move by someone more distinguished. We should, rather, seek out the lowest places and
we may be promoted. God opposes those who promote themselves, but favors those who humble
themselves: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be
exalted.” (11) Self-promotion leads to humiliation. Let us not follow the pattern and arrogance of this
self-promoting world, but humble ourselves before God and men and He will exalt us in due time. In
God’s economy the way up is down.
