Luke 22:35-38
The disciples were about to experience a major transition. Jesus now faced a time of suffering and
death so they would need to move into another phase of their relationship with Him and this world. He
asks if they ever lacked anything when they were sent out by Him and they readily admitted they lacked
nothing. Now, however, they are going to face a time where they cannot lean upon Him and will need
provision and protection. They have no choice but to face a dark time as Jesus came to the essential
fulfillment of prophesy in Isaiah. What Jesus said was not to be taken literally, but they presented Him
with two swords and He said, “It is enough.” (36c). In fact one such sword became an interference to
God’s purpose when Peter cut of the ear of a man. To face dark times of transition we do not need
greater earthly weaponry, but greater reliance on God in prayer!
