Luke 8:19-21
As Jesus’ popularity grew, it became increasingly difficult for His family to see Him: “…and they were
unable to get to Him because of the crowd.” (19b). So they informed Jesus of their desire. However, His
response was not what they, or what we might think: “But he answered and said to them, ‘My mother
and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.’” (21). His true family were those who
honored God’s word. These had precedence over His natural family. This was not neglect of
responsibilities, but commitment to the well being of His true and eternal family. True family are those
focused on hearing and obeying God.
