Luke 12:16-21
Jesus told a parable about a rich man with very productive land. “And reasoning to himself, saying,
‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’” (17) His reasoning was flawed absent of
genuine reality and proper perception. Why? He left out God entirely! He saw the crops as his and for
himself alone. He did not see abundance as God’s blessing or himself as a steward of that blessing, but
its owner. Consequently, he could not see God’s purpose. He did not see this as being for those in
need or for his family’s future, but for his own comfort, security and enjoyment (19). His focus ignored
any relationship with God and, therefore, any concern for others or even the condition of his own soul.
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what
you have prepared?’ So is the man who stores up treasure for. himself, and is not rich toward God.”
(20) Are we utilizing what God entrusts to us for ourselves, or are we seeking Him for direction to use
His blessing to serve others and be truly rich, rich toward God?
