Luke 9:12-17
I’m sure the apostles thought Jesus went above and beyond ministering to a crowd while needing rest.
So as they day was ending, they asked Him to send the crowds away to find lodging and food. Jesus’
response, “…’You give them something to eat!’…” (13a), seemed not only unreasonable, but
impossible. Their supply was sadly lacking. Jesus gave orders to prepare to receive and, “Then He took
the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept
giving them to the disciples to set before the people.” (16) Not only was there enough for all, but there
were twelve baskets of ‘broken pieces’ left over. Jesus did not gaze at the lack, but was looking to
heaven, blessing and breaking and giving it for sharing. The direction of our gaze, the attitude of our
hearts, and actions of generosity, can turn our lack into abundance.
