1 Chronicles 23:1-32
“When David was old and full of days, he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel. Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, the priests, and the Levites. The Levites 30 years old or more were counted;…” (1-3a) To ensure a healthy transition, David understood he needed an organized team. A large number were put in change of the Lord’s temple. Some served as officers and judges to serve people. Also, he installed gatekeepers to guard the entrances of the Jerusalem. The final group were appointed to praise the Lord with instruments David made for worship. We are then given some details of their appointments. “For David said, ‘The LORD God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He has come to stay in Jerusalem forever.” (25). More details follow regarding the sons of Aaron serving as priests over the worship elements, their consecration [purification], and their work in the temple. Interesting to note: “They are also to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to the LORD, and likewise in the evening.” (30). We must not minimize the value of praise and worship in our generational transitions.
