1 Chronicles 11:10-47
“Now these are the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who gave him strong support in his kingdom together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.” (10) David’s ascension to power was over a period of time and included critical supportive elements. “…the heads of the mighty men…” (1a) reflect the importance of an authority structure even among the mighty men. No matter our gifting, we still need an authority structure. We also see the strong support from the entire nation of Israel. It was a corporate accomplishment. Next, this was not a well thought out man made organization, but was “…according to the word of the LORD…” (1c). We should also note the characteristics of ‘the mighty men of David.’ They faced overwhelming odds, fought without regard to self, and brought about heroic victories only possible by God’s power. These men become heroes by facing the impossible with courage, fighting selflessly being were empowered by God, and were unwaveringly loyal to David. We still need war heroes in the church today who are loyal to Christ and confident in the power of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word. May God raise such selfless heroes in the church today!
