Luke 23:44-54
As Jesus was on the cross, darkness came over the land from 12 – 3 PM: “…because the sun was
obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two.” (45). The atmosphere began to change: “And
Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, ‘FATHER, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.’” (46).
The mocking ceased and the torn veil indicated a new access to God’s merciful presence. As the
soldier observed His dying and death, He saw what he previously did not and praised God, saying:
“…Certainly this man was innocent.” (47b). Joseph, a member of the council who disapproved of their
actions, risked his life and reputation to provide Jesus a dignified burial. While Jesus’ followers were
overcome with sorrow, Joseph and this soldier engaged in praise and worship. How we handle our
darkest hours enables others to see what they were previously did not, and move them praise and
worship.
