2 Chronicles 32:1-8
“After these acts of faithfulness Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and besieged the fortified cities, and intended [said] to break into them for himself.” (1) Hezekiah made mistakes in the past by allying himself with Egypt and trying to make a deal with the king of Assyria. However, this attack followed on the heals of ‘acts of faithfulness’ to God. When we seek God and respond faithfully to His Word, we stir the waters of war with the enemies of God’s people. This time Hezekiah did not respond in fear but took decisive action! First, he stopped the supply of water to their enemies with the help of those in Jerusalem (3-4). Next, he rebuilt the wall [it was broken down] and made an abundant supply of weapons and shields. Third, he organized the military (6) and gathered them for encouragement: “‘…for the One with us is greater than the one with him. With him is only an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.’ And the people relied on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.” (7b-8). Faithfulness to God will be challenged by war! We must not yield to threats and intimidations from the enemy, but fully lean on God’s Word. We cannot, and should not, dialog and negotiate with the enemy, but fortify ourselves against his advances and intimidations leaning fully on God’s Word.
