2 Chronicles 20:1-13
Jehoshaphat instituted reforms following his repentance from allying with Ahab. He established healthy spiritual leadership and brought all God’s people back to Him (19:4). “Now it came about after this, that the sons of Moab and the sons of Ammon, together with some of the Meunites, came to make war against Jehoshaphat” (1). Nothing unites enemies against us like spiritual reformation (actual change and not mere emotional experiences). Jehoshaphat was afraid and began to seek the Lord and called all Judah to fast as they gathered to seek God’s help (3-4). His prayer contains key elements for powerful prayer in the face of opposition. First, he speaks of God’s greatness in Who He is, [present], what He has done for Israel [history], and what He has promised to do [future] for those who humble themselves before Him (6-9). After focusing his faith on God’s greatness, he presents his petition for help pointing out they are taking away from them what God gave them. Finally, he expresses their weakness, “…For we are powerless…” (12b) and their posture of hope: “…but our eyes are on You.” (12d). Jehoshaphat’s prayer became powerful pointing the entire nation to God! “All Judah was standing before the LORD, with their infants, their wives, and their children.” (13)
