Luke 7:1-10
“And a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die.” (2) When this
[Roman] soldier heard of Jesus, he sent Jewish leaders to request He come and save his life. These
elders viewed the centurion as worthy of a miracle because he loved and was generous toward them.
This centurion clearly valued others, even those not of his class or race. As Jesus got close to his
house, “…the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, ‘Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not
worthy for You to come under my roof; for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; for this
reason I did not even consider myself worth to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will
be healed.” (7bc). It is fascinating others saw him as worthy, but in view of Who Jesus was, he did not
see himself as worthy. The slave was healed but the centurion’s faith was key. It was Jesus proper
alignment with God enabling the soldiers faith. The key was Jesus worth and not his own.
